Simple Steps to Flawless Skin During Quarantine
One of the most common requests I get from friends and followers, is to share tips and tricks for a flawless makeup application. The first thing I tell them is that perfect makeup always begins with skincare. When your skin is healthy and radiant, not only do you need less makeup, but the makeup will apply more smoothly, last longer, and look flawless on your skin.
Since I was a teenager, battling oily skin and breakouts, skin masks and peels have always been a priority in my skincare routine. I’ve tried everything from spa level treatments, dermatologist office skin peels, to at home packaged skin masks and DIY (do it yourself) skin masks and exfoliating treatments.
During our usual daily lives, we have various options ranging from spa/salon treatments, to DIY. Currently, we find ourselves in an uncertain time where going to a salon or spa isn’t an option. No need to worry though, because we still have two great choices: Prepackaged masks and chemical treatments or DIY, using natural ingredients found in our cabinets at home. Personally, I love DIY options because not only does it save money, it also enables us to utilize, and make the best of, natural ingredients we have in our very own kitchen cabinets!
Believe it or not, you can get similar, or even the same results, as spa or prepackaged skincare treatments utilizing DIY masks. Remember, homemade facial masks and skincare have been around for thousands of years, way longer than chemical peels or spa treatments! I’ve compiled a list of popular and highly effective ingredients you can use to create DIY skin masks to help with ALL skin types and skin challenges.
Lemon Juice: Lemon juice is seriously one of G-d’s amazing gifts to humanity. Loaded with Vitamin C, antibacterial, and anti-fungus properties, it’s great for oily or skin prone to breakouts, and it helps clear up acne and acne scarring.
Honey: As a child, our Russian born babysitter used to swear by the benefits of honey. New pimple popped up? Apply honey over it and leave it overnight. Dry skin patch? Soak it in honey. After years of utilizing it to help with a range of skin challenges, I realized how right she was. Honey is a natural anti-bacterial (hence its benefits for skin breakouts), it’s moisturizing but won’t cause breakouts, super soothing for your skin, and last but not least, a great complexion booster- helps bring out your skin’s natural glow!
Cocoa: Has more benefits than simply for creating delicious baked goods, cocoa is super beneficial for your skin. Rich in antioxidants, cocoa helps repair skin; lessens redness and inflammation caused by acne; and improves skin by making it brighter and clearer.
Olive Oil: Great for dry skin, olive oil not only moisturizes but also contains anti-bacterial properties and large amounts of anti-oxidants, and is loaded with vitamins A, D, E, and K.
Coffee: If I’m allowed to play favorites, I’m going to have to go with coffee! My favorite ingredient hands down! I always make sure to add instant caffeinated coffee to my masks to help reduce dark circles and bloating. Coffee also has anti-aging and calming effects, and is a natural skin brightener.
How to use it:
Mix 2 - 3 Tablespoons of either coffee or cocoa powder with a few teaspoons of any of the above listed liquids to achieve your desired result.
I.e. if your goal is to reduce blasting and clear up acne and oily skin, mix coffee with lemon juice and honey.
Add enough liquids to achieve a paste like consistency. You can always add water if need be. Apply it and leave on for 20-30 minutes. Rinse off with warm water.
